She cursed loudly as her shoe straps resisted the command of her fingers. She had five minutes to leave her apartment.
Grabbing a wad of cash from the bedside table, she stumbled to the floor mirror and did a quick scan. Clean blouse, check. Dark jeans, check. Sandals, check. The only thing left to do was touch her face up so that she didn’t look as pasty as she had fifteen minutes ago, when the evening alarm had flung her off the bed.
She scattered her makeup products across a damp towel. God. There was no time for any sort of glam coverage. Her cheap concealer stick would have to do. She applied it hastily over the red spots on her cheeks and checked in the mirror that no streaks showed. Satisfied, she puckered her mouth and dabbed on a new lip tint. It was a warm shade of pink, only slightly deeper than her natural color. The sales lady at the drugstore had crooned about it to her and she had pocketed it immediately.
She swished about to four quick sprays of her perfume. Left, right, back, neck. Pleased with the soft notes of jasmine and sandalwood that floated off her, she set the glass bottle down, then skittered across the room to her jewelry box. Luckily for her, an attractive pair of danglers instantly caught her eye from within the mess and she tugged them on. Oxidized silver. Perfect.
Before flipping the lights off, she dispensed a dollop of mousse in her palms and scrunched them into her hair. Her volumizing efforts in those final thirty seconds were ineffectual, but at least she had fluffed in some fragrance. Breezy, aquatic.
With a spirited click of her shoes, she strutted out the door.
